The sea at my hometown

Written by Jung Jay Joh
Translated by C. K. Yoon

I first went with my mother to see the boundless sea as a child.
I long for the sea at my hometown where I caught cockles and picked lavers.
Alas! Blocked is the tideland. Also gone is the tidal field.

Piled up are the wastes at the islets in the Dado and Western Seas;
From the Han River some flowed, from China some others invaded.
Good heavens! On the dinner table served are sea-shells and fish polluted.

Suffering from the red tides this year again, the sea waters moan.
With the sea bottom floor unfolding white like a desert,
Who will look after your mother very sick? Oh, the sea waters thrown!

The Taean Peninsula oil-polluted. Like yesterday I recall it vivid.
Splendid, it was already mopped clean by a million hands combined.
Though the sea is infinite, can it beat your bountiful mind?
